For years, residents along the Highway of Tears have been hearing that better connectivity and cell service is on the way.
But, yesterday, construction finally kicked off near Witset on the first of 12 new Rogers cell towers along the highway.
Rogers plans to fill 252 kms of service gaps along Highway 16 between Prince George and Prince Rupert.
That accounts for nearly a third of the infamous highway which has seen countless murdered and missing Indigenous women.
In addition, Rogers plans to province coverage to three rest stops along the road at Boulder Creek, Basalt Creek, and Sanderson Point.
The coverage is part of a 50 million dollar Federal government investment to improve broadband access in rural and remote communities.
Rogers Communications has also sponsored the Two Sisters Totem Poles which are part of a Highway of Tears Commemoration and Healing Totem Pole Series.
