Tahltan members are taking control over predator management on their territory, through a newly introduced framework.
Through their new Predator Management Framework, the Tahltan Central Government hopes to counter decreasing ungulate populations.
Recent research has revealed that current wolf populations on Tahltan territory range between 15 and 24 wolves per 1,000 square kms.
In order to maintain stable caribou populations, the highest that number should be is 6.5 per 1,000 square kms.
In order to better control populations, the framework will incentivize Tahltan members for hunting predatory species, such as wolves and grizzly bears.
Under the framework, the TCG will hire on four full time staff to support the program, which includes population monitoring and control, data collection, wildlife research, and implementing the knowledge of Elders.
