Cultural safety and intergenerational healing are at the core of a new First Nations Wellness Centre in Williams Lake, which officially opened last week.
While the Centre technically opened its doors on October 11th, pandemic-related delays prevented holding an opening ceremony until Friday.
Located at 281 1st Avenue North, the Centre combines primary health care, social supports, and Indigenous supports into one, team-based model.
It marks the second of 15 First Nations-led wellness centres planned province-wide, and the first in a rural or remote community.
Representatives from the Dakelh Dene, Tsilhqot’in, and Secwepemc Nations will provide guidance and advice to the First Nations Health Authority, who will operate the site.
In total, the centre will feature 19 full-time staff, including primary care providers, traditional wellness healers, allied practitioners, and more.
