British Columbia’s Ministry of Environment has confirmed a diesel spill had been reported on Monday June 3rd, at the Green Island Lighthouse, Northwest of Prince Rupert, off the coast from the community of Lax Kwa’aalams
According to the department, an estimated 46-hundred liters of Diesel Fuel had been spilled from a fuel tank at the Green Island Lighthouse, with confirmed impacts to both land and marine environments, the extent of which are not yet known.
Few details could be confirmed so far, but Resources to support the mitigation efforts have been mobilized, and a Unified Command has been established, including representatives from local first nations governments alongside the Canadian coast guard, Environment Canada, and BC’s Ministry of Environment.
Meanwhile Lax Kw’alaams Band has expressed their deep concerns about the spill
“The Lax Kw’alaams Band is deeply concerned about the diesel spill reported near Green Island
on June 3, 2025. The release of approximately 4,600 liters of diesel fuel poses serious risks to
our marine environment, coastal ecosystems, and the health and well-being of our community
members, many of whom rely on these waters for harvesting, sustenance, and as a way of life
passed down through generations.
We expect full accountability from the responsible parties and are calling for transparency in the
response efforts. This incident underscores the critical importance of strong environmental
safeguards and swift action in the face of ecological threats.
We will continue to advocate for the protection of our lands and waters and will keep our
members informed as new information becomes available.”
-Mayor Garry Reece Lax Kw’alaams Band
This is a developing story, and we will update our coverage as details of the spill are made available.
