Canada Post held a special event in Prince Albert today to honour Métis elder and Michif language keeper Sophie McDougall, who will be featured on a new commemorative stamp.
McDougall, who passed away in 2023, was a respected educator and community leader, known for her work in preserving and teaching the Michif language—spoken by many Métis people. She spent decades translating materials, teaching, and sharing her culture with generations of students.
Born in St. Louis, Saskatchewan, in 1928, McDougall was a descendant of the area’s first settlers. Her first teaching job was at a remote school north of North Battleford in 1945. Later in life, she appeared in a YouTube series, helped develop a language app, and was honored with the Order of Gabriel Dumont Gold Medal.
The stamp, featuring her portrait and imagery from her hometown, is one of three Indigenous Leaders stamps being released on June 20th—just ahead of National Indigenous Peoples Day. The series, launched in 2022, celebrates First Nations, Métis, and Inuit leaders who have helped preserve their cultures and communities.
