B.C. drivers can ignore the viral online rumours claiming all Canadian school zones will be enforced 24 hours a day starting July 1. The BC Highway Patrol says this information is completely false.
No changes are coming to school zone enforcement in B.C., and there are no plans for a nationwide shift. According to Corporal Michael McLaughlin, the misinformation is being spread by disreputable websites and amplified by AI-generated content and social media posts.
In BC, the law is clear: school zones are in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on regular school days, unless signage states otherwise. That hasn’t changed.
Officials are reminding people to think critically about where their information is coming from. Traffic laws are provincial, not federal. Any major changes would require cooperation across governments and would be accompanied by clear public announcements.
Some of the false reports also mention unrelated topics like mandatory advanced driver systems and tougher impaired driving laws, all lumped together to mislead the public.
For accurate information about B.C.’s traffic laws, officials recommend checking with ICBC or the Ministry of Transportation not social media or unknown websites.
Again, there are no changes to school zone rules on July 1.
