Canadians eligible for the GST/HST credit will see a slightly larger payment hit their bank accounts this Friday, July 4. The quarterly, tax-free credit—meant to help low- and modest-income individuals and families offset sales tax costs—is going up by 2.7%.
The Canada Revenue Agency says most people don’t need to apply for the credit, as eligibility is automatically assessed when taxes are filed. To qualify, you must be at least 19 and a Canadian resident for tax purposes. Younger individuals may also qualify if they have a spouse, common-law partner, or a child.
Payment amounts vary depending on income and family status. This year, eligible individuals could receive up to $533, with couples also receiving up to $533 and $184 for each child under 19.
The previous GST credit was issued in April, with the next scheduled for October 3. Anyone who doesn’t receive Friday’s payment is advised to wait 10 working days before contacting the CRA.
The increase follows ongoing efforts by the federal government to help Canadians manage the rising cost of living. In 2022, the GST credit was temporarily doubled during peak inflation.
