The District of Kitimat is monitoring a Tsunami Watch issued for parts of coastal B.C., including the Kitimat area. The watch follows a magnitude 8.7 earthquake that struck near Kamchatka, Russia earlier this afternoon.
A tsunami watch means a tsunami is possible, but the level of danger is not yet known. There is no immediate threat, but residents are advised to stay away from the shoreline and avoid unnecessary travel to low-lying coastal areas.
