CN Rail is advancing a bold investment strategy with the Zanardi Rapids Bridge Project, a cornerstone initiative aimed at increasing rail capacity to and from the Port of Prince Rupert—one of North America’s fastest-growing trade gateways.
Located near Port Edward, the new 1600-foot bridge will eliminate a critical bottleneck and enable more than 24 trains per day, significantly expanding the corridor’s capacity and preparing it for projected trade growth over the next decade. The project also involves several miles of new track and better integration with CN’s Class 1 continental rail network.
The Port of Prince Rupert offers unique advantages: it’s 500 nautical miles closer to Asia than southern ports, has the deepest natural harbour in North America, and provides direct access to Pacific shipping lanes. These factors make it a strategic hub for trans-Pacific trade.
CN’s investment aligns with several terminal expansions already underway, including the Ridley Island Energy Export Facility, the CANXPORT transload yard, and the Import Container Transload Facility—all part of a larger plan to reinforce the port’s competitiveness and supply chain resilience.
With the Zanardi Rapids Bridge, CN is helping to secure the region’s role in powering the North American economy—now and in the future.
