The Iskut Band officially opened its new school, Łuwechōn Kots’ede’i Kime, also known as the House of Learning, today. (October 16). The state-of-the-art 1,463 square-meter school is a proud replacement for the aging Klappan Independent School, which had been in use since 1978. Designed with input from the community, including students, Elders, and educators, the new school represents a fresh start for education in Iskut.
The school will offer in-class education from kindergarten to grade 9, with online learning options available for grades 10-12. Due to the growing demand for education within the community, plans are already underway to expand the school to accommodate more students in the future. The project was funded through a partnership with the Government of Canada, contributing $24.5 million, and an additional $900,000 from the Iskut Band.
Located in Tahltan Territory along the Stewart-Cassier Highway, the Iskut Band’s new facility serves not only as a place of learning but as a symbol of cultural renewal, providing students with the opportunity to remain connected to their language and heritage while pursuing their education.
