The Government of Canada has officially designated Ksi Lisims LNG and the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) Project as Projects of National Interest. The designation also applies to the Nass Valley Regional Transmission Line, moving the projects under the Major Projects Office. This aims to coordinate federal support, create investment certainty, and ensure Indigenous participation as the projects work toward a Final Investment Decision in the coming months.
The Nisga’a Nation, a co-developer, welcomes the recognition as a milestone for Indigenous-led economic development. Eva Clayton, President of the Nisga’a Lisims Government, highlighted that the projects will help maintain culture, traditions, and economic stability for Nisga’a citizens and communities along the corridor. She said these projects demonstrate what Indigenous economic independence and shared prosperity can look like for British Columbia, Canada, and beyond.
Ksi Lisims LNG is a proposed liquefied natural gas facility located on Nisga’a Nation lands in northwest B.C., designed to reach net-zero emissions when fully powered by the BC Hydro grid. The PRGT Project is a natural gas pipeline that will supply the LNG terminal. Both projects have gone through rigorous environmental assessments and aim to create economic opportunities for Indigenous communities, provide low-carbon LNG to international markets, and diversify Canada’s trade flows.
The Nisga’a Nation continues to work toward agreements with First Nations, secure project financing, and obtain federal support for Indigenous equity participation, marking a significant step toward realizing these transformative nation-building projects.
