In this episode of Good Medicine, we speak with Stellat’en First Nation filmmaker Lyana Patrick about her feature documentary Nechako: It Will Be a Big River Again, now streaming across Canada through the National Film Board.
The film tells the story of the Nechako River, which was permanently altered when the Kenney Dam diverted nearly seventy percent of its flow in the 1950s, and follows the Stellat’en and Saik’uz Nations as they work to restore the river, protect their communities, and assert their rights.
Through decades of resistance, community leadership, and intergenerational knowledge, the documentary captures the voices of Elders, youth, and land defenders while exploring water as a living relative, the role of Indigenous law, and the power of storytelling in cultural healing and resurgence.
This conversation with Lyana Patrick highlights the courage, resilience, and hope that guide these communities as they reclaim their river and their future. Nechako: It Will Be a Big River Again is available for streaming on the NFB website and app.
