Anahim Lake RCMP say two snowmobilers who went missing earlier this week have been recovered from Charlotte Lake.
Anahim Lake RCMP received a report on February 20th that the pair had not been seen since February 17th. While officers were on their way, neighbours began searching and found the couple deceased beneath the ice on Charlotte Lake.
Investigators believe the man and woman, along with their snowmobiles, broke through the ice on February 17th. Police say because the couple was reported missing several days later, the lake had refrozen, hiding the break in the ice.
On February 22nd, the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team attended the scene and recovered both individuals.
The victims have been identified as a 65-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman from 100 Mile House. Criminality is not believed to be a factor. The BC Coroners Service continues to investigate.
Anahim Lake RCMP Detachment Commander Scott Clay is urging the public to use extreme caution on frozen lakes and rivers, noting that fluctuating temperatures can significantly increase the risk.
