The Assembly of Treaty Chiefs in Alberta representing Treaties No. 6, 7, and 8 have unanimously passed a Vote of No Confidence in the Alberta Government led by Premier Danielle Smith of the United Conservative Party.
Treaty Chiefs passed the vote at a recent meeting on Treaty 6 territory in Enoch, Alberta, condemning the Smith government for what they called its refusal to respond appropriately to the current political atmosphere surrounding their Treaty territories.
The Chiefs added, the UCP-led Alberta government has continually failed to uphold its Treaty-based responsibilities, and has demonstrated a critical lack of respect and understanding of them.
“This UCP government has created conditions in Alberta that are unsafe for First Nations Peoples – promoting ignorance and intolerance along with its support for the separatist agenda is leading to outright racism. Danielle Smith’s government is acting as an embassy for the worst we’ve seen from south of the border, and it’s time to say no. No one wants the future this government is taking us into.” – Sunchild First Nation Chief Joey Pete, also the Grand Chief of the Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 First Nations
The AOTC has now called on sitting members of the Alberta Government to trigger a Vote of Non-Confidence at the Provincial level.
