UPDATE: Telecommunication services have been partially restored in the Northwest
Cellphones, landlines, internet and 9-1-1 services had been interrupted across the Northwest, as well as parts of the central coast, lower mainland, and large sections of Alberta for much of today, with TELUS reporting a major widespread outage on their network starting at 3:18am this morning, Monday, May 4th, 2026. As of 5:30pm, services have been restored in the Northwest but outages persist in parts of Alberta and southern BC.
TELUS confirmed repair crews had been dispatched by 4:40am, with an update later in the day saying services were expected to be restored by the early evening. At least in the Northwest, the outage had been caused by a cable theft, with TELUS reporting damage to their infrastructure.

Most communities on Haida Gwaii, along Highway 16 to from Prince Rupert to Burns Lake, throughout the Nass valley, as well as Stewart, Klemtu and Bella Bella had been affected.
With 9-1-1 services affected, Provincial authorities have said you should still attempt to call 9-1-1 for help in case of an emergency, but if you are not able to get through, they suggest you seek out help directly at your local RCMP detachment or Health Centre.
