Housing is always a big election issue and it is mostly a provincial one, but we asked Terrace’s mayoral candidates what the City should do to help.
And for Dianna Penner, the focus is on one of the most vulnerable groups: seniors and elders.
She says her goal would be to diversify housing to support more groups.
That includes through a review of already available spaces which could be repurposed for housing.
For Terry Fulljames, making housing affordable starts with making building affordable.
As a former building contractor himself, he also says the city should review bylaws to make it easier to build more housing.
Incumbent Sean Bujtas also says housing costs need to come down and that senior housing the most in need, but also has ideas for younger residents.
He says lobbying the province for incentives to bring market housing to the community will be key to solving the crunch.
Since 2014, the City has added more than 800 new housing units, but vacancy rates remain near-zero.
One of the three will serve as Terrace’s next mayor.
General election day is this Saturday (October 17th), with polls open at the Terrace Sportsplex from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, not to be confused with provincial elections, which are a week later in the Skeena Mall.
