One north coast and four Treaty 8 First Nations have invested in the Coastal GasLink Pipeline expansion.
They include the Haisla Nation, McLeod Lake Indian Band, and the Halfway River, Saulteau and West Moberly First Nations.
While the exact details haven’t been made public, the deal is with TC Energy, who own a 35 percent stake in the pipeline themselves.
It currently processes about 2.1 billion cubic feet of gas daily, but the expansion aims to double that to keep pace with LNG Canada’s recently greenlit Phase Two.
First Nations along the route were given a 10 percent stake in the original pipeline.
TC Energy says this new deal is the first of two Indigenous investments in the CGL expansion, with news of another coming later this year.
