With industry in the rest of the northwest poised to become BC’s breadbasket, interest in Terrace’s Skeena Industrial Development Park remains low.
So we asked your mayoral candidates what types of industry the city should look to attract, and how.
Terry Fulljames says we need to get in on some of the resource-based industries that are leading to that regional boom.
He says whatever we do with the Park, it has to get the most bang for the buck out of the new North Coast Transmission Line’s added power.
Incumbent Sean Bujtas says we need to end the boom or bust cycle by bringing in smaller industry that compliments surrounding communities.
For him, the first step will be lobbying for funding for a water system at the Industrial Park to attract smaller developments.
Dianna Penner, meanwhile, is taking a completely different approach to the Industrial Park lands.
She’d like to see them used instead for a correctional facility, or a rehabilitation or treatment centre.
She says that way we could build the tax base while tackling some community issues.
General election day is this Saturday (October 17th), with polls open at the Terrace Sportsplex from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, not to be confused with provincial elections, which are a week later in the Skeena Mall.
