Another lawsuit has been filed over OpenAI’s involvement in the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting, this time by OpenAI.
They’re looking to have the courts throw out an investigation launched by BC’s Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner.
OpenAI, who own ChatGPT, says the Commissioner has no reasonable grounds to believe they violated the Personal Information and Protection Act.
According to the OIPS, their investigation is focused on whether the use of personal info in ChatGPT responses was appropriate given the circumstances.
That includes their potential to influence human behaviour.
The investigation had not yet been made public.
OpenAI also calls the investigation redundent, as they already wrapped-up a 3 year investigation in May.
That found they did not follow Canadian law and launched in Canada despite known privacy issues.
They say that’s already prompted commitments which would put it in line with privacy laws.
Last month, the company asked courts in California to throw out dozens of lawsuits against them that they say should have been filed in BC.
13 Year-old Victim released from hospital
In a bit of uplifting news from a tragedy, 13 year-old Tumbler Ridge shooting victim Maya Gebala has been released from hospital.
It comes nine months after doctors told her family she was unlikely to survive through the night.
She’s been through five surgeries since, including a cranioplasty to install a prosthetic guard in her skull in May.
It had been partially shattered after she was shot three times in February’s mass shooting.
Yesterday, he father David shared a video on social media of her being excitedly wheeled out of hospital in a wheelchair.
Her family is among dozens suing OpenAI for ChatGPT’s role in the shooting.
They claim OpenAI’s safety team had repeatedly asked leadership to report the shooter to authorities, but were overridden.
That’s owing to disturbing messages in which the chat bot allegedly advised the shooter.
OpenAI is seeking to have the claims, filed in California thrown out.
Lawyers say they were filed there due to higher damage claim caps than BC, and because it’s where the company is based.
