Mayoral intervention was required to deal with a series of water pipe ruptures at the Coachman Apartments in Terrace over the past few days.
Pipes in both occupied and vacant units at the Sparks Street facility began bursting amid extreme colds on December 23rd.
But, with their landlord recently passing away, and no building manager assigned, tenants were left confused on how to fix the problem.
Eventually, members of the Kermode Friendship Society reached out to Mayor Sean Bujtas, on behalf of the tenants.
Bujtas was able to get in contact with the Ministry of Housing for permission to enter the vacant units so the water could be shut off.
With significant water damage throughout the building, and pipes continuing to burst, tenants are being asked to temporarily vacate the building.
Emergency Social Services is providing hotel rooms over the next 72 hours for those who choose to do so.
But the City is stressing that it is optional and temporary, and that no one is being evicted or thrown out on the street.
