An extended investment from the province aims to help remote First Nations move away from diesel use.
New funding in the form of $30 million will go towards the Community Energy Diesel Reduction program over the next three years.
Through the New Relationship Trust, nations can apply for support in finding cleaner energy options like solar, hydro-electric, biomass, and wind.
According to the province, a majority of BC’s 44 remote communities are governed by first nations.
In 2019, those communities consumed at least 19.1 million litres of diesel, emitting carbon dioxide equivalent to that of 11,000 vehicles.
During it’s first intake, the program assissted 12 nations plan and execute their pivot away from diesel powered energy generators.
Originally launched in 2022, the new funding is estimated to fund 96 projects over the programs 6 year lifespan.
