The City of Terrace has started reconfiguring traffic lanes on Kalum Street between Greig Avenue and Soucie Avenue, as part of a broader effort to improve safety and traffic flow for all road users.
The most significant change reduces Kalum Street from two lanes in each direction to one lane each way, separated by a new two-way centre turn lane. The redesign is based on an ICBC road audit focused on minimizing collisions and improving the street’s overall function.
Additional changes include adjusting lane widths, adding buffers between parked vehicles and bike lanes, and introducing new on-street parking where turn lanes have been consolidated.
While work is ongoing, drivers are reminded to use the single straight-through lane as a temporary turn lane. Parking and bike lanes must not be used for turning. As road markings are completed over the coming days, the city expects traffic flow to become more intuitive.
The configuration mirrors similar lane setups already in place in other parts of Terrace, such as the Lakelse Avenue blocks near Skeena Mall.
Motorists are urged to drive with caution in the area while the changes are implemented.
