Canada’s New Democratic Party officially launched its federal leadership race today, marking the start of a new chapter for the party and its grassroots movement across the country.
NDP President Mary Shortall says the leadership race is a chance to spark national conversations about the future of the country—conversations grounded in progressive values like fairness, justice, and hope. She says party members are looking forward to a leadership contest that is democratic, inclusive, and inspiring.
Leadership application packages were released on August 20, and the party says strong early interest signals a dynamic and engaging race ahead.
The NDP also launched a new website — leadership.ndp.ca — which includes the full leadership rules, an FAQ, and a list of approved candidates as they’re confirmed. In the coming weeks, the site will also feature a central events hub to highlight local activities organized by riding associations, youth groups, and activists.
The race will conclude at the NDP’s national convention in Winnipeg on March 29, 2026, when the new federal leader will be announced.
The contest comes at a pivotal moment for the NDP as it looks to energize supporters and set a clear direction heading into the next federal election.
