Provincial funding will support a new community composting facility in Skidegate, providing residents with more options for organic waste management and helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
BC NDP MLA Tamara Davidson, representing North Coast – Haida Gwaii, says the Skidegate Community Composting Project is locally led and reflects the needs of rural and remote communities. “This project will help contribute to lower emissions, healthy soil and good, clean jobs for people in Skidegate and Daajing Giids,” Davidson said.
The facility will receive $850,000 to process 296 tonnes of organic waste per year and provide curbside collection for 148 tonnes annually. It is expected to reduce 1,629 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions by 2030 and will create two full-time and three part-time jobs.
This investment is part of a broader initiative supporting Indigenous-led organics processing projects, including Tla’amin Nation and the Nisga’a Village of New Aiyansh, with a total of $2.6 million in provincial funding. The projects aim to build local infrastructure, improve curbside collection programs, and advance reconciliation through community-led environmental solutions.
