An Air Quality Advisory has been issued for Smithers today, due to the elevated presence of coarse particulate matter in the air – which is to say, it’s quite dusty today as the traffic has been kicking up traction material used on winter roads.
Impacts from the air quality are considered to be moderate, but more severe for those with chronic conditions like asthma, COPD, heart trouble, diabetes and things like chest infections. Experts advise that seniors, infants, and those who are pregnant are also at an increased risk.
The Air Quality Advisory will remain in effect until at least tomorrow, when the Province will issue an update to its Air Quality Warnings webpage.
Conditions as of 10:00A.M this morning, Friday, March 13th were just slightly over the threshold for an Air Quality Advisory to be issued, with 51.6 micrograms per cubic meter of coarse particulate matter in the air, and the threshold being 50.
