APTN has launched a new language initiative in partnership with Rocket Fund Canada in the hopes of making screen-based children’s programs and content in Indigenous languages more accessible in Canada.
The Living Languages initiative has been described by APTN as a way to foster language revitalization within Indigenous communities, and help children and families engage with their language.
With the funding provided via Rocket Fund, which is a world renown financial backer of children’s media programming, Living Languages will develop a ‘family-focused language education series’ that primarily focuses on Indigenous languages that have strong speaker communities, but lack access to educational media in their language for kids.
To do this, fluent speakers and Indigenous language educators will act as advisors throughout the process, and will help pave the way for the next generation of Indigenous language productions.
No production timeline has yet been confirmed, but CFNR News has reached out to APTN for more details on what to expect, and if any communities and languages from the Northwest may be featured in the series.
We’ll have more details as we can confirm them.
