A liquefied natural gas project planned for the Nass River area has secured a major long-term customer in Europe.
Ksi Lisims LNG has signed a Sale and Purchase Agreement with German energy company Uniper, which will buy two million tonnes of LNG a year for up to two decades. First deliveries are expected in 2032. It’s being called the first major long-term LNG supply agreement between Canada and Germany.
The deal was signed in Germany, with Germany’s federal economic affairs minister and Canada’s ambassador to Germany both present.
Ksi Lisims LNG is proposed for Nisga’a Nation-owned land on the northern tip of Pearse Island. The project is co-developed by the Nisga’a Nation alongside Western LNG and Rockies LNG, and is designed to run on hydroelectric power rather than natural gas, which backers say could make it one of the lowest-emission LNG facilities in the world.
Nisga’a Lisims Government President Eva Clayton says the deal reflects the Nisga’a principle of the Common Bowl, which calls for sharing resources and working together.
“We are proud that this agreement with Uniper reflects the Common Bowl philosophy,” Clayton said, adding she’s grateful to see governments on both sides of the Atlantic working together to make it happen.
Ksi Lisims still needs more customers lined up before the project can move into construction.
