Gitanyow’s first dedicated Elders housing project is nearing completion, creating new opportunities for community members to age in place or return home.
Xsi’Gintaiyin Elders Housing was developed after years of observing the accessibility needs of Gitanyow’s aging population. Beverly Russell, manager of the Sindihl House of Learning, says community input played an important role in shaping the project.
A community survey helped identify what Elders wanted and needed in their homes, including accessibility features and in-unit feast storage for regalia and traditional items.
Russell says cultural design was also a priority. The two-storey building features a traditional longhouse-inspired design, with cedar and charred wood elements throughout the exterior. An elevator was also included to provide access to the second floor.
The project received support from Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs, BC Housing, Gitanyow Band Council and Gitanyow Human Services.
Russell says the housing could provide an opportunity for people who have lived away from Gitanyow to reconnect with family, culture and community.
Applications are now open, with preference given to Elders 55 and older, Gitanyow Wilp members, Gitanyow Band members and Gitanyow community members.
Russell says one applicant has lived away from Gitanyow for more than 50 years and hopes to return home.
The housing application is available through the Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs, with an intake coordinator available to help applicants through the process.
