AI data centres have become one of the hottest topics this election, and while none of Terrace’s mayoral candidates want one, they have different reasons.
Incumbent Sean Bujtas says, with low taxation and job creation rates, he just doesn’t see the fit in Terrace.
But he says the city needs to be cautious with and listen to industry, and do their homework on other types of data centres with less or no water usage.
Dianna Penner says there are many types of data centres, but she’d never support the AI one proposed.
Like Bujtas, she says the Industrial lands could be used in much better ways that support more job creation.
Terry Fulljames says we should weigh on the experts and other communities to make a decision, but that the jury’s still out.
Despite growing concerns, there has been no firm official pitch to bring an AI data centre to Terrace.
But how the mayor will handle one in the future is something to consider when you hit the polls.
General election day is this Saturday (October 17th), with polls open at the Terrace Sportsplex from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, not to be confused with provincial elections, which are a week later in the Skeena Mall.
