Each of the parties have a different vision for the future of DRIPA, if they win Saturday’s election.
Only the Greens want to keep the landmark Indigenous rights act around in its current form.
Their Skeena candidate, Nick Gottlieb, says that’s because they’re the only ones willing to do the hard work to implement it.
He says most of the backlash against it is owing to misinformation spread by the other parties to support industry.
The NDP had sought to first amend, then suspend the legislation amid legal battles, but we still don’t know what their plan for it is now.
Skeena candidate Sarah Zimmerman is committed to working with First Nations and government to find out what that solution is.
Conservative incumbent Claire Rattee says DRIPA has made things worse, leading to uncertainty and constant court cases.
But she does say First Nations consultation and reconciliation are necesseties, but clearer legislation that’s easier to understand is needed.
We’ve been unable to reach OneBC’s Larry Taylor, but he also supports repealing DRIPA but does want to form different partnerships with First Nations.
One of four will be our next MLA when polls close on Saturday.
